FAQ

Questions we hear often

Straight answers about how we work, what we build, and what to expect when you start a project with SqualaDesign.

Frequently asked questions

What does SqualaDesign do?

We design and build websites, branding, e-commerce and digital marketing for New Zealand and international clients, and we also develop web applications, ERP and CRM systems, and SaaS products. Strategy, original design, development, launch and ongoing optimisation are part of the same process.

Do you use templates?

No. Front ends are custom to your brand. We choose a CMS or shop platform that fits the project (for example WordPress, Drupal or SilverStripe for content sites, and WooCommerce, Shopify or Magento for shops), then build around how you work.

How long does a website project take?

It depends on scope, content readiness and how many rounds of review you need. A simple website with fewer than 10 pages can take up to 2 weeks; larger shops or custom software take longer. We agree a clear timeline after the discovery stage.

How much does a project cost?

Pricing follows the brief: pages, features, integrations and ongoing care. We offer a free, no-obligation quote once we understand your goals. Contact us and we will outline options that match your budget.

Do you use AI in your work?

Yes: to improve, develop and optimise faster. Creative direction, brand design and launch decisions stay with people. You still get human judgement, care and thorough testing.

Can you maintain the site after launch?

Yes. Support and maintenance covers updates, security, performance and small refinements so the site stays healthy as your business grows. Ask about ongoing care when we scope the project.

Where are you based?

We are a South Canterbury web agency, working with clients locally and around the world.

What is MiBaseNZ?

MiBaseNZ is our own cloud-based toy library management system. SqualaDesign designed, built and supports it for toy libraries across New Zealand. It is live software we run every day, not a side demo.

What if the design or build isn’t quite right?

We review with you in stages, so feedback lands early, not only at the end. If something misses the mark, we adjust it. The goal is a result you are proud to put your name on, and a working relationship that lasts beyond launch day.

Why not use a free website builder myself?

DIY builders are fine for a quick experiment. For a serious business site you usually need stronger mobile behaviour, faster pages, clearer paths to enquire or buy, and a structure that supports search. We design and build for those outcomes, not just a page that looks busy online.

Most of my work comes from referrals. Is a website still worth it?

Referrals are excellent. The next step for many people is still a quick search. A clear, current website reassures them you are real, professional and easy to contact. It doesn’t replace trust built face to face; it backs it up when someone looks you up.

I’ve paid for websites before and never seen a return. Why would this be different?

We hear this often. Many sites are built to look finished, not to generate enquiries or sales. We focus on clear messaging, structure and calls to action, plus performance and SEO foundations, so the site supports real business outcomes, not just a pretty brochure online.

Can you redesign or rebuild my existing website?

Yes. We regularly redesign and rebuild existing sites, refreshing design, improving structure and performance, migrating content where needed, and moving you onto a platform that fits how you work today.

Do I need to provide all the content myself?

Not necessarily. Your knowledge of the business matters most. We can help shape structure and copy, suggest what belongs on each page, and work with your photos or organise further content support when the project needs it.

Can I update the website myself after launch?

Yes. We build on a CMS so you can update text, images and everyday pages with confidence. Every client receives detailed documentation and training on how to update and use their website. We set the admin up practically, and if you’d rather we handle changes, our support and maintenance options cover that.

Are there ongoing fees after the website is finished?

The build is quoted as a project. After launch, many clients choose ongoing care such as support and maintenance, SEO, or marketing packages, always itemised in detail so you know exactly what is included. We’ll explain those options before you start. There are no surprise invoices for work you didn’t agree to.

Can you connect my website to tools like Xero or Mailchimp?

Yes. We set up integrations with accounting, email, payments, CRM and similar platforms, including Xero, MYOB, Mailchimp, Stripe and more. If a product has an API, we can usually connect it to your website or custom system.
