Background

Who we are

SqualaDesign was founded in 2001 and built more than a decade of success in Italy. Founder Daniela Zavallone decided it was time to start a new life in New Zealand: the Italian company was closed and SqualaDesign reopened here in 2015, bringing European craft into a Kiwi practice.

Having started with roots in Italy, the team has a strong understanding of how the European industry works, and we are excited to bring that experience to New Zealand businesses, clubs and organisations.

We are passionate about our clients and have continued to work with original clients from those early years. Two Italian clients have been with us for about 20 years and are still active today: Costruzioni S.p.A. and La Fondazione.

Being a multilingual team, we are more than happy to take on international clients and would love to keep growing that part of our business, while we are equally excited to grow our New Zealand clientele.

A studio that builds what it designs

We care about the whole puzzle: strategy, original design, fast development, launch, marketing and ongoing optimisation. Many projects stay with us for years, local clubs and businesses, e-commerce brands, and long-standing Italian clients.

We use AI to improve, develop and optimise faster. Creative direction and brand design stay with people, you still get human judgement, care and thorough testing.

For selected projects we work with Rosewill Design, pairing their creative direction with SqualaDesign development. Together we have delivered HAVEN Mid-South Refuge and Ranger Asset Protection (design by Rosewill; development by SqualaDesign).

SqualaDesign Ltd owns MiBaseNZ, the toy library management system we designed, built and support for toy libraries across New Zealand. Live software, not a side demo: we host it, maintain it and improve it every day.
